Quite possibly Durrell himself did not feel this way, but dureell so there c,ea not in Darley’s phrase the slightest hint that he’s aware of how ridiculous this denial of independent agency might appear to half of the human race. Only a very few characters are allowed to speak directly of their experiences, and remarkably little happens in this book that is new—though when something does, in the swimming party near the end, Durrell at least equals the exciting climaxes of his other novels.

Inexplicably, he shuns her. I wish more people would read this liberating non-judgemental book about personal life juxtaposed with war and history. The book begins with the Narrator Darley living on a remote Greek island with Nessim’s illegitimate daughter from Melissa. All of the main participants take some sort of bow. But as yet it had not broken. The prose throughout the series is absolutely stunning, the characters completely believable including a range, in each, from sympathetic to unsympathetic as the reader meets them in different circumstances and with different knowledge.

They proceed to Alexandria, now under nightly bombardment because of the War WW2Darley continues to reminisce, sometimes lamenting, and seeks and sometimes finds, the characters of the earlier book. Certainly, no finer edition exists.

Unclipped Third Printing DJ is sunned on the spine and has some minor creases and chips at its margins. This series was absolutely wonderful — a meditation on love, on relationships, on fidelity, on perspective — and I likely would never have heard of Durrell in the first place had it not been for the Modern Library list.

Fine in dust jacket.

Clea herself, of course, is the beautiful blonde artist, whose entanglement with the dark and lovely Justine added some salacious interest to Justine durrel, and who created the portrait of Justine that gives the narrator Darley such comfort in his island exile Lists with This Book. This rich, exciting fare is Durrell’s finest writing style, a manner of writing few living authors can equal.
