Now having read the book, I just marvel at the film more, and can’t say that I’m aware of any more efficient ledis elegant translation of novel to screenplay, nor of a cast who has more successfully captured the spirit of their literary alter egos, without being a bit restrained by the text—very few lines straight from Lewis appear in the film.
Dodsworth lays bare many psychological and cultural truths, while giving a glimpse of life in France, Germany and Italy between the world wars.
This one’s a keeper, and I’ve read it several times since finding an old hardback copy in a used bookstore many years ago. He is also respected for his strong characterizations of modern working women. Sunclair subject, the differences between US and European intellect, manners, and morals, is one that frequently appears in the works of Henry James.

Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. This is supposed to be a “comedy” but it isn’t so far. And the drama of the breakdown of the Dodsworth marriage was, in the end, fairly commonplace stuff. The screenwriters did a great job adapting the book to film.
Fran is his forty-something wife, and together, they are doing the Grand Tour of E I’m a huge fan of the movie of this book, perfectly cast with Walter Huston and Ruth Chatterton, and I’ve read Elmer Gantryanother Sinclair Lewis book and great movie.
Lewis’ people are nearly spot on, intentionally stereotyped. Gotta clean the palate!

Lewis seems to me at his dodsworthh when handling a meaty subject and giving his satirical impulses free rein. Refresh and try again.

I won’t spoil the story because it’s not exactly what you think. Jun 25, Joseph Weyek rated it really liked it. Lewis’ fans in his own lifetime turned on him for this, but it’s time that we restore the respect and fame he deserves for being such an astute prognosticator; and with this copy of Dodsworth being auctioned at a deliberately low starting bid to encourage an actual sale, this is a fine choice for a collector who wishes to “beat the odds” before this re-lionization of Lewis takes place next decade.
They begin talking and, as a fellow American, she invites him to dinner at her small villa. Then it had made him the more tender. I understood Fran’s terror dodswortg the passing years, but not her complete selfishness and self-absorption.
He’s a millionaire, an automobile magnate, who, at 50 years of age finds himself willing to grow old gracefully, happy with who he is and what he’s become. So of course this trip docsworth London, Paris, Venice, and more, will bring their marriage to the breaking point. Finding oneself feels like no great gain at all.
